LAURA (WHAT'S HE GOT THAT I AIN'T GOT)

(Leon Ashley / Margie Singleton)

Laura What's He Got That I Ain't Got

Written by Leon Ashley and Margie Singleton

C F C
Laura hold these hands and count my fingers
                  F C
Laura touch these lips you once desired
         F G7 C
Lay your head upon my chest and hear my heart beat
D7 G7
Gently run your fingers through my hair

C F C
Touch these ears that's listened to your wishes
                  F C
Most of them full-filled and that's a lot
         F G7 C Am
Let your soft gentle hands caress my body
     Dm G7 C
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got

F G7 C
Tell me what he's got that I can't give you
   F G7 C
It must be something I was born without
    F G7 C Em Am
You took an awful chance to be with another man
   Dm G7 C
So tell me what he's got that I ain't got
                F C
Laura see these walls that I built for you
               F C
Laura see this carpet that I laid
F G7 C
See those fancy curtains on the windows
D7 G7
Touch those satin pillows on your bed

C F C
Laura count the dresses in your closet
                        F C
Note the name upon your checkbook in your bag
       F G7 C
And if there's time before I pull this trigger
     Dm G7 C
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got

     Dm G7 C
Then tell me what he's got that I ain't got

Laura, what's he got
 that I ain't got....

You were on my mind"....

Boris Mitchel 3 maanden geleden
When he said: "It there's time before I pull this trigger", was he gonna shoot HER or HIMSELF? Opinions?

Ive always wondered if he going to kill himself or her?

Margie Walton schreef :
I was Leon Ashley's wife for 48 years. He was the only person to ever write, produce, publish, record, record and release on his own record label a song and have it go to # 1 in all the trade magazines and remain in the charts something like 52 weeks. Many top stars covered him like Kenny Rogers, Marty Robbins , Claude King, Frankie Laine , Brook Benton , the New Beats to name a few. Naturally I think he had the best version because being the writer, he put more emotion into the song. I think it is a timeless song and if recorded by any one today it would be a big hit again. There is a CD out now called by the title "Laura"(What's He Got That I Ain't Got) by Leon Ashley on Gusto Records and I know it can be bought at Ernest Tubb Record shop in Nashville , Tn. Or probably could be ordered directly from Gusto Records also  in Nashville. There are some great original songs in that CD. I guess the secret of who killed who went to his grave with him cause even though I know , I AIN'T SAYING !!!!😍. Also there are 2 Duets with me  ( Margie Singleton ) on that CD. Thanks to all the favorable comments about his record.
waj5300 - A most interesting reply! When I first heard the song back around 1967 (by Brook Benton as well as Frankie Laine) the thought that he would murder Laura never entered *my* mind. I thought he had loved her totally, given his all, only to find she had chosen someone else in the end...which is about the most despairing situation a human can face.  Perhaps someone should ask Leon. But then maybe, like any song, novel, etc, it's what is in the in the mind of the beholder that counts

The search is over...
